As I recall, not having served in the military was a complaint that Republicans liked to lodge about Barack Obama.

And was leveled against Bill Clinton, and Dan Quayle (because being in the Coast Guard isn’t considered “the military” by most). It’s a tactic that both sides like to use.

Hi. I hope you and yours are enjoying the holiday. I think the only time I would fault a president for not having served would be if he or she was showing ineptitude toward the military or disregarding their military experts, such as, say, appointing a political hack to serve as the secretary of one branch or another.

It’s a rainy day at home. We will have a pseudo picnic for dinner inside.

I don’t think even having served in the military insulates a president from criticism amount his decisions in office. People will oppose or support based on their own opinions regardless. It’s a non-issue.

Our father avoided military service  through college deferments.

I once took issue with a guy in a gas station who threw his cigaret butt on the ground. After he said he was glad I led a "perfect life," the next two words out of his mouth were "President Obama." Presidents certainly do provide people with someone to focus their discontent upon.

You should have responded, “Hey! Do I look like a foreigner to you?” And then let him get an aneurysm trying to figure that out.

Hey, would you mind if I asked your opinion on something? My eldest daughter is due to deliver our first grandchild latter part of July. She and her husband and we have all been diligently social distancing all these weeks. She lives in Utah. When she delivers, we want to go there. What do you think would be prudent when we are there? Mask if we enter their home? Not enter their home at all? What are your thoughts on that?

That will be so cool! Babies somehow make you feel young and old in different ways at the same time.

That’s a complicated question. I asked my pediatrician wife for her thoughts too. First thing to take into account is risk where you are and where they are when it’s travel time. How much is infection prevalent in both areas then, as well as what your potential exposure will be from your chosen mode of travel ? Second thing, and I’m sure you’ll agree the most important, is what do the parents want? What is their level of comfort? Newborns have essentially no immune system other than what comes from Mom, and there have been newborn  Covid cases, including, I think, one death. Their comfort level is something I’m sure you and Mrs. Rusty will know well when it’s time to go.

For practical step s to take on the ground, I would think get tested if it’s available to you by then. If so, that can alleviate a lot of anxiety. It may make the difference between entering the home with masks or without, or perhaps whether or not they feel comfortable having you enter the home and sharing space with the baby. I would say plan to wear masks though, because that’s the very thing they are good for, keeping you from infecting anyone there. That, and probably get comfortable with the idea of social distancing from the baby regardless. Every grandparent wants to hold the child and play with his fingers, but maybe wait that experience for the next visit.

Thank you. Daughter wants her mother there desperately, so comfort on their end is good. But yes, the things you suggest we would have considered. And yes, the mask keeping the cooties in is the reason why I am grateful that the county is insisting that others wear theirs. Mode of travel would be motor vehicle and pulling out bedroom behind and great caution taken along the way. Great idea about getting tested; that I had not thought of. And availability of a test will probably greatly improve in another six or eight weeks.

Cheers and thanks to Dr. Mrs. Love for her input!

I am so much better positioned to enjoy these babies than I was for my own. I'm sure I'm not alone there...

We both h ope you have a safe and healthy visit, and that there is less need to worry (instead of more) when it comes time.
